Family Care Indonesia bettering the lives of Aceh Tsunami victims
Family Care Indonesia (FCI) has carried out
a wide swath of humanitarian projects in Jakarta and throughout Indonesia for well over a decade.
As dawn broke on December 26, 2004, it appeared that Sunday would be no
different than other weekend days. That changed when the
most powerful earthquake in more than 40 years struck under the Indian
Ocean, the epicenter just off Aceh on the northern tip of Indonesia. The resulting tsunami caused
massive death and damage throughout the region, not to speak of the eleven other countries affected.
Family Care Indonesia was one of the first foreign
charities allowed into the disaster area, and their first efforts in Aceh
focused on medical assistance, aid distribution and trauma counseling in IDP
refugee camps. LINK
The second stage of Family Care Indonesia programs included building and the replacement of
fishing boats for the villagers. LINK
Ongoing projects included the establishment of a free 24/7
medical center and ambulance service for the villages of Lhoong District, as
well as livelihood projects such as a restaurant and organic farming.
